Life in the Upper Valley

Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center is located in Lebanon, New Hampshire, alongside the Connecticut River, which defines the border with Vermont. Voted a top small town in the nation by livability.com, "Lebanon offers residents natural amenities and fulfilling life experiences that you just won’t find in big cities. Lebanon's visual appeal, strong economy and educational system, affordable housing, and civic engagement make it the top small town in the country."

Lebanon is next door to the Dartmouth College campus in Hanover, NH; two hours northwest of Boston; five hours north of New York City and three hours south of Montreal, Quebec. It is accessible via Interstates 89 and 91; airports in Manchester, NH, Lebanon, NH, and Burlington, VT; and by bus and Amtrak rail service to White River Junction, VT.

The Upper Valley, offers a wide range of year-round outdoor recreational activities as well as diverse social, cultural, and artistic communities. Situated near the Appalachian Trail, the area is renowned for its skiing in New Hampshire and Vermont, hiking, canoeing, and kayaking. In addition to Dartmouth's Hopkins Center for the Arts, leading venues for the performing arts include the Lebanon Opera House and the Northern Stage Company. The Upper Valley is also host to a wide variety of restaurants.

Residents come here to embrace the quality of life the Upper Valley offers. After a challenging day in the PICU, it is nice not to battle traffic on the ride home to a quiet residential neighborhood. Biking lanes can be found on most major streets. Running trails surround the Medical Center. In the winter, informal cross country skiing and snow shoeing trails appear in the many wooded areas of the Upper Valley with groomed trails found on the Dartmouth College Golf Course and many surrounding towns.
