Winter Safety

Happy winter!

This page provides winter safety resources that we hope will be of value to you and your school family from our Safe Kids NH program.

These include:

Multi-sport and ski helmets

We are including information on how to order low-cost ski/snowboard and multi-sport helmets:

Please note that Safe Kids NH does not receive any compensation for this! This is only to provide you with examples of programs you can use if you choose to do so. Skiers/riders can also take advantage of ski area rental programs or ski shop discounts in your community.

Ice skating and sledding are popular winter activities, and helmets are strongly encouraged! We recommend the use of a CPSC approved multi-sport helmet that meets the ASTM F1492 standard or a ski/snowboard helmet approved to either ASTM F2040 or EN1077.

Ice safety and falling

Checking ice for safety on ponds and lakes is critical to prevent winter drownings. Check out the NH Fish and Game website for more information on what to do before venturing out.

Falls are the leading cause of admissions at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center for most ages, including pediatrics. Impact-absorbing materials on playgrounds become much less effective in the winter, and a fall from a structure in winter can be much more damaging. Do you have a winter policy for your playground?

Sidewalk plowing

Please consider working with your community public works department to make sidewalk plowing and treatment on routes to school normally used by children a priority. Children walking in the road to get around snowbanks on sidewalks are a concern. Encourage high visibility clothing to help them be seen at all times.
