2019 CHaD HERO Exceeds Fundraising Goal

Bruce Denis

Over 3,000 HEROES filled the Dartmouth Green on October 20 to support CHaD Kids. The 14th annual CHaD HERO was a day filled with both celebration and remembrance. HEROES of all ages participated in the 5K walk or Cam’s Course, a 1-mile family-fun run, the 5 mile hike, the 50 or 25 mile bike ride, the 5 K run, or the half marathon. Spectators cheering on the racers also enjoyed a festive, family-centered event with food trucks, the HERO KidZone and live entertainment in downtown Hanover.

The 2019 HERO had a goal of raising $830,000 and we’re happy to report that to date, this important charity event has surpassed its goal! The money raised through the HERO goes to support vital CHaD programs and services. In addition to our HERO participants, our thanks goes out to the more than 400 volunteers who supercharged this incredible autumn day.

This year, HEROES saw their fundraising boosted by a very generous matching gift from the Jack and Dorothy Byrne Foundation. The grant matched up to $150,000 of fundraising over participant’s minimums, with youth (23 and under) being matched at 2:1! Over $300,000 was generated through this matching grant and we cannot thank the Jack and Dorothy Byrne Foundation enough for their continuing support of CHaD.

Dartmouth College’s Provost, Joseph Helble, kicked off Cam’s Course, CHaD’s Physician in Chief, Dr. Keith Loud started the Bike ride, and Dartmouth-Hitchcock’s CEO, Dr. Joanne Conroy started off the 5K run and half marathon.

CHaD’s 2019 “Kid HERO,” Finn Webster of Lebanon, NH, was on hand to kick off the hike as well as the 5K walk. Finn participated in Cam’s Course with family and friends later in the day! Team Finn 321 was once again one of the top fundraising teams bringing in over $10,000! Finn was in good company with both the 2017 and 2018 Kid HEROES, Jasper Vincent and Avery Smith also in attendance to participate in the day’s events and festivities.

Cam Marshall of Lyme, NH, once again kicked off his namesake course, the 1-mile family fun run “Cam’s Course.” After Cam was diagnosed with leukemia at 8-years old, his good friend Jasper Meyer decided he wanted to make a difference. Due to Jasper’s efforts, Cam’s Course was quickly implemented, and that same year Cam was carried over the finish line by his school principal. This year Cam celebrated being 8-years cancer-free. Cam’s Be Positive for CHaD Kids team continues to support the HERO each and every year.

Blake Dignes of Hanover, NH, was the top finisher in the CHaD HERO Half Marathon with a time of 1:13:21. The top female finisher was Sarah True, of West Lebanon, NH, crossing the finish line on the Green at 1:19:29. On the 5K course, Sean McDonough of Meriden, NH, finished in 16:46 as the top male finisher, while, for the third straight year, Caroline Pennacchi of Briarcliff Manor, NY, took home the top female place at 17:51 – nearly a minute faster than last year!

Sincere gratitude goes out from everyone on the CHaD Community Relations team, who annually executes this event.

“Despite a chillier day that we have in the past, people still came out to support CHaD and enjoy the community event! I am so proud of the team that organizes this event and want to especially thank our dedicated community partners, amazing volunteers, and heroic participants who come together each year to make a positive impact in the lives of CHaD kids.” – Evan Seely, Community Relations Manager
