$124,000 Raised at CHaD Baseball Game!

The final numbers are in and the 2018 CHaD Battle of the Badges Baseball Classic, presented by Faro Italian Grille, proved to be a record-breaker.  Thanks to sponsors, merchandise and ticket sales, and player fundraising, this year’s Police vs. Fire baseball showdown raised $124,000 for Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock (CHaD).

In front of a record 2,300 fans at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium in Manchester, 45 law enforcement and fire & rescue personnel hit the field to support vital CHaD programs and services that rely on philanthropy.

Team Police, sponsored this year by national non-profit Brothers Before Others, snagged the victory, 10-2, behind three dazzling innings from starting pitcher Garrett Jewell (Merrimack County Department of Corrections). Jewell faced nine hitters and record eight strikeouts to earn the victory for the second straight year.  He combined with Police pitchers Erik Willett (New Hampshire State Police), Lucas Ilges (Hollis), and Jack Wagoner (Londonderry) to hold Fire to just two hits.

The fundraising battle was won by the men in blue as well. Police generated $73,121 as a squad, led by the individual efforts of Chris Heney (Meredith) and Ed Shaughnessy (Bradford). The former raised $32,500 while the latter produced over $3,110.

Heney’s fundraising was boosted by the game’s presenting partner, Faro Italian Grille. In addition to its sponsorship of the game, the Laconia restaurant hosted a fundraiser for CHaD during Laconia’s bike week in June. The week-long initiative resulted in an additional $25,000 donation to support the game!

Team Fire’s fundraising efforts led by first-year player Corey Conroy (Newport) and second-year man Rich Racine (Manchester), who raised $3,953 and $3,905, respectively. As a squad, Team Fire, led by captain Bill Shea (Nashua), generated over $36,000.  In eight years, the game has now raised almost $550,000 for CHaD.

After the game, a brilliant fireworks show capped off a near-perfect night.

Thanks are due to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats and its staff for hosting CHaD for the game and for making things go as smoothly as possible.  Additionally, nearly 50 volunteers generously spent their Friday night helping raise money for CHaD kids.

WMUR once again played a huge role promoting the game, including morning, noon, and evening broadcasts from the ballpark on game day.

Photos of the game are posted on the Battle of the Badges Facebook page. Thanks to NH Sports Photography for their outstanding photos capturing the magic of this year’s game. Photos can be viewed here!
