Lipid and Weight Management Clinic

We are the only program in the region that treats children and adolescents needing specialized care for obesity. We also see children with cholesterol issues (familial hyperlipidemia). Our team offers multidisciplinary, family-centered care for children and teens who have been diagnosed with obesity, familial hyperlipidemia, and related conditions.

Pediatric Weight and Lipid Program

The Weight and Lipid team works with children and families to develop a treatment plan to address obesity and related complications, with the goal of improving overall health and wellbeing.

Our lifestyle-focused program follows evidence-based guidelines to support children and families in making sustainable changes that positively impact eating habits, fitness, self-esteem, and weight. Families have access to a dietitian, fitness coach, and psychologist team in addition to our obesity medicine physicians.

Our team offers a full range of treatments, including medication to manage obesity and related complications including:

  • Abnormal cholesterol levels
  • High blood pressure
  • Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), previously known as fatty liver disease
  • Metabolic syndrome
  • Pre-diabetes, diabetes, or insulin resistance

Our physicians are able to guide teens interested in pursuing metabolic surgery at regional programs.

Lipid Clinic

The goal of our lipid clinic is to diagnose and treat children and families with familial hyperlipidemia and other lipid disorders. The program focuses on making sustainable lifestyle changes that improve long-term health outcomes. This includes personalized diet and activity recommendations as well as lipid-lowering medications, if needed.

What to expect during your visit

Initial visit and care

An initial visit with our team includes a comprehensive medical and lifestyle assessment. Your provider may order blood work or other tests to assess your child's metabolic status. We will collaborate with you to create a plan that supports your child’s health goals.

Ongoing care

We recommend regular visits with our care team to monitor your child's progress. Each plan is created to meet your child's and your family's unique needs. During these visits, we will assess your child’s progress towards his or her health goals. Lifestyle change is the foundation of care with the additional of medications as needed in discussion with your provider

Our team will continue to adjust ongoing treatment with you and your child. This may include ongoing medical management and lifestyle counseling with our team and/or your child’s primary care physician. We work closely with primary care physicians and your child’s other health care providers to deliver coordinated care.
